The Cancer Integrative Medicine Program in the Department of Hematology and Oncology and Psychosocial Oncology in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Rush University Medical Center play a major role within the Department of Hematology and Oncology, which provides cancer treatment, research and education at the medical center. We believe in the importance of healing the whole person – in mind, body, and spirit. Our goal is to provide holistic Cancer Care, treating the whole patient, no matter where on the cancer trajectory they find themselves (from diagnosis to end-of-life). The service focuses on evaluation and treatment of the most common disorders found in cancer patients, through inpatient consultation and outpatient services. We provide a range of services for adults diagnosed with cancer as well as to family members and caregivers. The most common issues we address are:
-
Adjustment Disorders
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Health Related Quality of Life
-
Nausea
-
Pain
-
Swallowing/Nutritional Difficulties
-
Difficulty Complying with Recommendations
-
End-of-Life Issues
Additionally, we help patients and families cope with the emotional aspect of a cancer diagnosis and regain a sense of well-being. We promote healing by integrating holistic therapies with traditional cancer treatments. We teach strategies to manage the emotional impact of diagnosis, manage the side-effects of treatment, and improve quality of life for both patients and families affected by cancer.
