What is heart failure?

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart weakens and cannot pump enough blood throughout the body. It affects about five million people in the United States and contributes to 300,000 deaths each year.

It's important to recognize the warning signs of heart failure. Each sign or symptom by

itself may not be cause for worry, but if you have more than one of the symptoms, you should consider seeing your doctor. If you have already been diagnosed with heart failure, keep track of your symptoms and report any sudden changes to your doctor. Heart failure is a chronic disease but with treatment, your quality of life can improve.

Signs and Symptoms of Heart Failure

  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent coughing or wheezing
  • Swelling in feet, ankles, legs or abdomen
  • Tiredness, fatigue
  • Lack of appetite
  • Confusion, impaired thinking
  • Increased heart rate
