Molecular biology of epileptogenesis
Patients who are candidates for epilepsy surgery (seizure focus resection) are asked to donate a small portion of the brain tissue that will be removed as part of their planned, elective surgery. The purpose of the study is to collect brain tissue from epilepsy surgery patients and study the tissues to further our understanding of epilepsy and possibly develop new treatments in the future. The types of tests that will take place on the tissue will consist of microscopic analysis related to brain chemical activity and anatomical structure. Other than being asked to donate a portion of the brain tissue that is being removed as part of the planned surgery, the study does not require participants to do anything extra.
