Heart Attack: Know the Symptoms

The following are the most common heart attack symptoms:

  • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, tightness or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back
  • Discomfort or pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck, jaw, arms or back
  • Chest discomfort accompanied by lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath

The following are less common warning signs of heart attack that should still be taken seriously, especially by women, who are somewhat more likely than men to experience these symptoms:

  • Abnormal chest, stomach or abdominal pain
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue
  • Palpitations, cold sweat or paleness

If you experience symptoms of a heart attack, call 911. Don't be embarrassed, and don't hesitate — just call. Treatments such as clot-busting drugs can actually stop heart attacks in progress, limit damage and save lives. But they must be administered shortly after symptoms begin in order to be effective. In the case of both heart attack and stroke, don't try to drive yourself to the hospital. Paramedics can help begin lifesaving measures sooner and alert the hospital to your arrival.
