| | | Douglas R. Smego, MD | | Douglas R. Smego, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He received his MD degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his internship and general surgery residency at New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical Center, followed by a trauma fellowship at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
After practicing for many years as both a general and vascular surgeon, Dr. Smego received his cardiothoracic training at Montefiore Medical Center, the main teaching hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. There, he received many awards, including House Staff of the Year. He recently finished one-and-a-half years of aortic and mitral valve fellowship training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
He was named a "Best Doctor" in Connecticut by Connecticut Magazine and "Best Doctors" in the New York metropolitan area by New York Magazine.
Dr. Smego specializes in adult cardiac surgery, complex diseases of the thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta, valve-sparing aortic root replacement, mitral valve repair, multi-valve repair and endovascular aortic stenting. Dr. Smego's publications include recent submissions to Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
