A Minimally Invasive Fix for Heart Defects

Now, thanks to a minimally invasive treatment option available at Rush University Medical Center, patients who were born with heart defects — and those for whom open heart surgery is considered too risky — can receive replacement pulmonary valves without a surgical incision.

This advance is particularly good news for patients born with a right ventricular valve defect. These patients typically need multiple open heart surgeries throughout their lives — first to replace the original diseased valve and then to replace artificial valves as they age, according to Ziyad M. Hijazi, MD, MPH, director of the Rush Center for Congenital and Structural Heart Disease. The surgeries, which require a heart-lung machine to keep blood circulating while the heart is motionless during cardiopulmonary bypass, can be both physically demanding and emotionally taxing on patients.

With the minimally invasive procedure, however, the replacement valve is delivered via a catheter to the still-beating heart — a strategy that removes the need for the heart-lung machine and has the potential to significantly shorten recovery time.
