-
-
-
Minimally invasive surgical approaches to biopsy growths and remove tumors, which, when compared with traditional surgeries, means smaller incisions and typically less hospital time for patients
-
A full range of advanced chemotherapeutic agents
-
Radiation therapies that allow higher dosease to be delivered to tumors while limiting the dose to healthy tissue, including 3-D radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and interstitial brachytherapy
- Radiofrequency ablation therapy, an image-guided technique for esophageal cancers that kills cancer cells by heating and destroying them
Genetic Counseling and Testing
In addition to the screenings above, we are also committed to work with patients who have family histories of gastrointestinal cancer. Genetic counseling, in which family histories are reviewed, and testing are also part of our program to determine an individual’s risk for gastrointestinal cancers. Rush University Medical Center has an Inherited Susceptibility to Cancer Center, which we work closely with to assist our patients and their families.
As part of our work, we also partner with the Sandra Rosenberg Registry for Hereditary and Familial Colon Cancer, which is the only active colorectal cancer registry in Illinois, and one of just 32 in the United States. The registry is dedicated to the fight against colon cancer by promoting awareness, providing colon cancer risk assessments, specialized counseling and genetic testing. Get more information about the registry.
Complementary Integrative Cancer Medicine
Rush has a dedicated Cancer Integrative Medicine program which offers patients access to complementary treatments including acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, counseling, massage therapy, medical hypnosis, nutritional counseling and yoga. For more information, see our Cancer Integrative Medicine Program page.
Supportive and Educational Services
Rush is committed to helping patients and their families cope with the psychological, emotional and spiritual effects of cancer. We offer our patients access to a variety of cancer support programs, including the opportunity to meet with an American Cancer Society patient navigator, who assesses the individual patient needs and provides information about available community services and programs.
Additionally, as part of our commitment to quality, comprehensive care, the clinc offers periodic supportive and educational services to patients and their families.
