Health Information Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia refers to the pain or discomfort in the area around the outside of the vagina (specifically the vulva). The pain and discomfort is not related to any apparent condition, such as an infection or skin problem. Many women needlessly suffer with this disorder and delay diagnosis. The important thing to remember is that treatment options are available.

You may experience the following symptoms in your genital area:

  • Burning
  • Stinging
  • Irritation
  • Feeling of rawness
  • A stabbing pain
  • Itching sensation

You may have one or more of these symptoms. They may be consistent are intermittent. The important thing is to consult with your doctor, so that you can begin exploring treatment options.

For more information read the Vulvodynia: Frequently Asked Questions from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
