The Gastrointestinal and Liver pathology practice at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is led by Shriram Jakate, MD, who trained in pathology at the world-renowned Post Graduate Institute and Medical Research Center (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, India. He later trained in liver and gastrointestinal pathology at Leeds, United Kingdom, under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Dixon, an international authority in the field of gastrointestinal pathology.
He is currently professor of Pathology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and director of Laboratory Services at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago. He has been practicing GI and liver pathology exclusively for the last 18 years with a unique clinico-pathological correlative diagnostic style. He is internationally known for describing a new disease entity "mastocytic enterocolitis," performing nationwide "Glass-less and Paper-less" virtual microscopy consultations for gastrointestinal and liver pathology, and advocating the use of jumbo biopsy forceps for gastrointestinal submucosal masses and surveillance biopsies. He is a member of several societies including United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Roger Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society and Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society. He evaluates at least 4,000 gastrointestinal and at least 1,000 liver pathology cases annually.
