| | | Robert Kimura, MD | | Robert E. Kimura, MD, is a professor of pediatrics, vice-chairperson of the Department of Pediatrics, director of the section of Neonatology, and associate dean of medical Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Kimura received the degree of bachelor of science with honors in applied mathematics from Brown University in 1972. He earned his doctorate in medicine from Case Western Reserve University in 1976. Dr. Kimura received his residency training in pediatrics (1976-1979) and fellowship training in Neonatology (1979-1981) at Yale University. Dr. Kimura was board certified in pediatrics in 1982 and sub-board certified in neonatology in 1983. Dr. Kimura has been the director of neonatology and clinical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) since 1991. During this time, the average census of the NICU has increased from 28 to 50 patients per day. The NICU at Rush has been nationally recognized for having the highest nursing retention rate and for many unique programs that help empower parents. Dr. Kimura is internationally recognized for his studies of developmental metabolic changes in the intestine and the transport of intestinal substrates. He has been the principal investigator of three studies in these fields funded by the National Institute of Health. He is currently interested in delineating the pathophysiology of multi-organ systems failure. He has published more than 50 manuscripts and book chapters.
