Diabetes is a growing problem, and Hispanics, particularly Mexican Americans, are especially hard hit by this illness; as many as 24 percent of Mexican Americans in the United States between the ages of 45 and 74 have diabetes. Mexican Americans are more likely to die and suffer from diabetes complications, such as kidney failure, heart disease, and blindness than non-Hispanic whites. Researchers at Rush are offering a new program to study ways to help Mexican American with diabetes.

With the purpose to better understand this problem and to find new ways to help Mexican American with diabetes, investigators at Rush University Medical Center are offering a new program called MATCH and are looking for Mexican Americans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus who live in Chicago to participate. Participants will receive information regarding their diet, medicine, physical activity, how to work with their doctor and much more advice that can help to better their health. Participation in the program is free and voluntary.

The MATCH Study is subsidized by a grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institutes of Health.

Diabetes es un problema creciente, y los Hispanos, particularmente los Mexicano Americanos, son unas de los populaciones mas afectadas.  Hasta 24% de los Hispanos en los Estados Unidos entre la edad de 45 y 74 años tienen diabetes. Mexicano Americanos tienen mas riesgo de morir y sufrir complicaciones de diabetes, incluyendo falla renal, infermedad del corazón, y ceguera.

Con el proposito de entender este problema y encontrar maneras nuevas para ayudar Mexicano Americanos con diabetes, investigadores del Centro Medico Universidad Rush estan ofreciendo un programa nuevo que se llama MATCH. Estan buscando Mexicano Americanos diagnosticados con Diabetes Typo 2 que viven en Chicago para participar. Los participantes del estudio recibirán información sobre la dieta, medicamentos, actividad fisica, como trabajar con su doctor, y mucho mas consejos que ayudaria con el mejoramiento de su salud. La participación en el programa es gratis y voluntaria.

El estudio MATCH es auspiciado por una concesión del Instituto Nacional de la Diabetes y Enfermedades Digestivas y del Riñón, del Instituto Nacional de Salud.

Clinical Trial Eligibility Criteria

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Consider yourself to be Mexican American
  • Have type 2 diabetes
  • Have any type of insurance including Medicaid, Medicare with Part B, private insurance, or you visit a free clinic
  • Live in one of the following zip codes: 60608, 60623, 60622, 60639, 60651, 60647, 60641, 60618
