A Study of Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth in Older Individuals
Older individuals are often burdened with the gastrointestinal symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating and constipation. Small bowel bacterial overgrowth, characterized by an increased number of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, is a condition seen more frequently in older individuals. The goal of this study is to see if there is a relationship between bacterial overgrowth in the small and large intestine and abdominal symptoms in older individuals.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Ae 50 years of age and above
- Are undergoing elective upper endoscopy or colonoscopy as an outpatient
- Have no presence of underlying chronic gastrointestinal disease (such as Celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease)
- Have not used of antibiotics within the past 1 month
