Inflammatory bowel disease and melatonin



Clinical Trial Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to measure melatonin levels at night from saliva samples, and to learn more about how melatonin levels in the body relate to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). First, the participant will be be required to sleep on a fixed sleeping schedule for seven days. Second, at the end of those seven days, the participant will need to stay overnight at Rush for measurements of the level of melatonin in saliva. 



Clinical Trial Eligibility Criteria

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Are 18 to 45 years of age
  • Have an inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis)
  • Have one of the above diseases in remission for at least four weeks
  • Are not on antibiotics
