Kyphoplasty & Vertebroplasty

Kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty is indicated for painful compression fractures of the thoracic or lumbar spine caused by osteoporosis. When the pain associated with these fractures are unresponsive to conservative managment, a kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty is sometimes indicated.

Kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty involves injecting a cement-like material into the fractured vertebrae with the goal of stabilizing the fracture and reducing the pain. Kyphoplasty involves an additional step during which a special balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebrae and inflated The purpose of this is to attempt to restore the height of the vertebrae prior to injecting the cement-like material.
