Spine, Back & Neck
Dr. Phillips specializes in the spine and has special interests in cervical and lumbar reconstructive surgery. He also has expertise in minimally invasive spinal procedures including percutaneous decompression, fusion, and treatment of osteoporotic spinal fractures. Dr. Phillips has participated in the development of a number of minimally invasive spinal procedures and instrumentation systems. Dr. Phillips’ basic science research efforts have focused on biologic strategies including gene therapy to promote spinal fusion and intervertebral disc regeneration.
A medical graduate from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Phillips completed his orthopaedic residency at The University of Chicago Medical Center. In addition, he served a spine fellowship at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Before coming to Midwest Orthopaedics, Dr. Phillips served as the Director of The University of Chicago Spine Center, in addition to being an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Chicago. Dr. Phillips has published and lectured extensively on spinal topics and serves on the Research Committee of the North American Spine Society. He has also received numerous research grants.
