Improving Chicago’s West Side Community
Rush is dedicated to serving its Near West Side Community and the city of Chicago as a whole. We believe a hospital should be a pillar of its community, and our institutional citizenship takes many forms. In fact, Rush’s investment in community health care exceeds $120 million annually.
Such Rush programs as the Science and Math Excellence Network, which enhances educational opportunities for students at 50 at-risk Chicago public schools, and the Rush Community Service Initiatives Program and RU Caring, both student community outreach programs of Rush University, enhance the lives of residents in Rush’s neighboring communities. These communities have come to depend on the health clinics, vaccinations, health fairs and volunteer services Rush’s programs offer. Rush depends in part on external support to fulfill this community service component of our mission.
“As a community pharmacy, Walgreens is always looking for partners to carry the health care message to the community. Rush’s community health fair is a great example of how we can work together to improve the quality of life for people in our community who may be underserved.” — John Gremer, director of community affairs, Walgreen Company

We also have a physical connection to the West Side. Those Rush buildings that were built prior to the construction of the Eisenhower Expressway reflected a strong connection to the surrounding neighborhood. In the coming years, the physical transformation of Rush’s campus will add more green spaces both to the ground and roof tops and will extend a warm welcome to the West Side, revitalizing the neighborhood at street level.
