James E. Calvin, MD, Director, Section of Cardiology 

Dr. James Calvin was appointed Director of the Section of Cardiology in the Department of Internal Medicine and Professor of Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in 2002.

Dr. Calvin is a graduate of Dalhousie University and Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Critical Care and in Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Calvin’s training as a medical resident, senior resident in Critical Care, and chief medical resident took place at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He was a senior resident in Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Ontario. His Cardiology research fellowship was at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California in San Francisco. From 1983-1991, he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine, then Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Dr. Calvin joined Rush as an Associate Professor in 1991. He was the first Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Rush from 1991 to 1998 and then was appointed the Chairman of the Division of Adult Cardiology at John Stroger’s Hospital of Cook County in 1999. He has many honors in research and in education with approximately $5 million of research funding during his career.

Dr. Calvin received the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 1986 and the Society’s Internal Medicine Research Award in 1990. He received the Department of Medicine Teaching Award from Rush University Medical Center and the Quentin Young Leadership Award from the Department of Medicine at John Stroger’s Hospital of Cook County.

Dr. Calvin is a fellow of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. He was the President of the Chicago Cardiology Group and is a member of the Association of Subspecialty Professors.

Dr. Calvin has over 250 abstracts, refereed articles, and book chapters. His interests in cardiology have been broad in nature though concentrating on coronary artery disease and have included basic physiology, outcomes research and resource utilization, and clinical trials in acute coronary syndromes.

Presently, as Director, Section of Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, he has demonstrated great leadership and talent in organizing outstanding patient care and achieving academic excellence with prudent use of available resources. He is a hands-on clinician in the office, in the cath lab, and on the wards. He is very instrumental in integrating the activities of cardiology at Rush University Medical Center with those under the John Stroger’s Hospital of Cook County’s umbrella.
