| | | Meet Our Nurses: Ben, RN, MSN | | Since Ben started at Rush in 1997, he has been enthusiastically involved in quality improvement initiatives. His work on 8 South JRB, a geriatric psychiatric unit which serves medically complex patients, has provided multiple opportunities for improving the care of patients with dementia and depression.
One of these initiatives focuses on the care of the patients with dementia. Ben and several other staff developed a teaching series for the staff on his unit after attending a “train the trainer” class about “Caring for the Person with Dementia.”
He and his team provided half-day training sessions which helped to develop staff awareness of working with and caring for persons with dementia. This project transitioned the care on the unit to patient-centered care, with less of a focus on tasks, and more participation by the patients in their care.
Now that most of the unit staff has been trained, the team is offering the workshop for caregivers in the medical center.
Ben loves working with the older adult population and has dedicated his career to gerontology. He credits his co-workers on 8 South JRB with part of his passion for this work. He says that they are like a big supportive family and make it enjoyable to do his job.
