Research at Rush About the Associate Provost for Research and Vice President

James L. Mulshine, MD, is the associate provost for research and vice president at Rush University Medical Center. In this role, he is the primary academic officer responsible for all aspects of the research enterprise at Rush.

Dr. Mulshine is an internationally recognized expert in lung cancer research. Before coming to Rush, he served as head of the Intervention Section, Center for Cancer Research, at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Dr. Mulshine's recent work has concentrated on management of early diseases as a key to improving outcomes in lung cancer treatment. His research interests also include clinical trials for non-small-cell lung cancer, tumor immunology, early cancer detection and cancer intervention research. He is currently the principal investigator on seven studies. He has been awarded eight patents and has been honored with numerous academic awards.

Dr. Mulshine is on the editorial boards of Oncology, Cure, Cancer Today, International Journal of Oncology, Lung Cancer Frontiers, Cancer Prevention International and Clinical Cancer Research. He has written editorial reviews for the New England Journal of Medicine, British Journal of Cancer, Blood, Cancer, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He also sits on many national and international scientific and foundation advisory boards.

He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Mulshine received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross, and his medical degree from Loyola University of Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In 1980, he moved to the NCI, where he completed clinical and research fellowships in medical oncology. He subsequently joined the faculty there. During his time at the NCI, he served as the NCI intramural chair of the Institutional Review Board and served as the NCI representative to the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement Subcommittee for the National Institutes of Health.
