Clinical Services at Rush Arranging a Ride

If you can take public transportation and have Medicaid, contact your caseworker to request CTA passes to come to the doctor’s office. If you or your child cannot travel on public transportation because of medical reasons, consider using transportation via Medicaid. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation. Here are the main steps.

  1. Schedule a clinic appointment. The Rush HTC phone number is (877) RUSH-KID.
  2. Select a medical transportation company contracted with public aid. Our clinic cannot recommend providers. A provider list is available from First Transit at (877) 725-0569.
  3. Call the transportation company of your choosing and see if it is available to take you to the visit. If you are accompanying your child to his or her doctor visit, let the company know you will need room for yourself and your minor child. If the company cannot accommodate you, call another company. Reserve a ride. Say you’ll call back with a First Transit approval number. Make your reservation one week in advance.
  4. Call First Transit at (877) 725-0569 to provide the information about the appointment. A representative will ask the medical reason that you cannot take public transportation. For example, you may say, “I have blood clots in my leg so I can’t stand and wait for the bus” or “My son has severe hemophilia with joint problems that make walking more than a block very difficult.” You will also need to provide your Medicaid identification numbers and your transportation company. Make sure room is included for a parent who will accompany the minor child, and request round-trip rides. You will be given an approval number for each child. Write those numbers down.
  5. Call your transportation provider and provide approval numbers from First Transit.
  6. Be ready early and wait for your ride to come.
  7. If you have to reschedule your appointment, let First Transit and the transportation company know.

Remember: It is difficult to reserve a ride if you call less than a week before your date of appointment.

If you have this information handy before you call, the call will go more smoothly.

  • Patient’s name
  • Patient’s date of birth

  • Medicaid recipient number
  • Medical reason you cannot use public transportation (not just diagnosis)

If, after completing the above steps, you require additional assistance, please call the Rush HTC social worker, Debra Honig, LCSW, at (312) 942-6747.
