Integrating Home Care |
|
|
Utilizing home care services, when appropriate, can help you feel empowered to take control of your health. Many patients who are treated for bleeding and clotting disorders are able to perform some of their care at home. Prompt treatment at home can help minimize symptoms and prevent complications. This can reduce the frequency of doctor visits and visits to the emergency room.
Not all patients are appropriate for home care. It requires teaching by nurses, and demands good, regular communication with your health care team. In addition, you may still need to come to the hospital for problems that cannot be managed at home.
If home care is right for you, your doctor and nurse can help you identify a home care provider. There are a number of home care organizations in the area. The consumer should explore all the available options. For those with private health insurance, expect to have to get approval of the home care company with an insurance staff member. Your insurance company may have a contract with specific programs that it pays for providing home care services. Make sure your home care company knows about all your insurance and supplemental programs (like DSCC) to maximize coverage.
Rush administers a factor distribution program, Rush For Life, offering home care services and choice in factor replacement therapy. The program is designed as a 340b covered entity and therefore is eligible to purchase factor from manufacturers at a substantial discount. The cost savings is passed onto the patient. Profits allow our center to deliver comprehensive services. (For more information, please refer to MASAC recommendation #40.)
