Travel requires extra planning when a patient or family member has a bleeding or clotting disorder that is largely unknown to the general public. One special consideration is having to travel with supplies including needles and medication. Most airport and airline staff have become increasingly cautious about passengers traveling with needles and other unfamiliar supplies, and will probably taken notice of and have questions about your supplies. If you are travelling by air, we recommend that you keep these items in your carry on luggage. We strongly suggest that when traveling by air you bring a travel letter that states the medical need to travel with needles and other medical supplies, in case someone asks when luggage is routinely screened. Also, we advise you to take along your physician's number and names of local doctors near where you are visiting. Check out the HTC directory or call your physician for a reference. If you are a patient at the Rush HTC and require a travel letter or reference, kindly let our staff know at least one week in advance of your departure.
