Information is critical in an emergency. Should you be unable to communicate, health care providers must be made aware of your condition and special needs. Medicalert is a not-for-profit organization that provides medical identification for patients with chronic illnesses. They can provide medical bracelets, necklaces or medical identification cards that can provide information to laypersons or emergency personnel in case of an emergency. Members who use Medicalert are registered in their computer system, which houses information regarding diagnosis and treatment. In an emergency, callers can contact Medicalert for this important information if you or your closest loved ones are not immediately available. Contact Medicalert for information The initial fee for membership is $35; the annual renewal fee is $20. A short application is required. If you are unable to afford the membership, you may apply for a fee waiver. To obtain a waiver, you must submit an application with proof of medical need, such as a Medicaid card.
