Stress is an unavoidable part of life. Caring for oneself or a family member with a chronic illness may lead to additional stress. Pain, joint disease, periods of convalescence, uncertainty of symptoms, intravenous therapy, frequent medical monitoring and physician visits, hospitalization, and absence from school or work are some of the unique demands associated with bleeding or clotting disorders that may contribute to stress.

Symptoms of Stress

The following are a list of some of the common symptoms associated with stress. Some of these symptoms can be related to a medical problem though they can be worse when stress is present. Therefore, always review these symptoms with a physician.
  • Headaches
  • Stomach problems (heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, nausea)
  • General feelings of anxiety or tension
  • Irritability
  • Pain to the neck, lower back, shoulders or jaw
  • Eating problems (not feeling hungry, frequent eating)
  • Difficulty with sleeping (can't sleep, bad dreams, waking in the middle of the night)
  • Frequent smoking
  • Excessive use of alcohol
  • Use of drugs
  • Increase in the use of medication (aspirin, sleeping pills, tranquilizers)
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Depression (may be caused by medical problems)
  • Overall feeling of fatigue
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Grinding teeth
  • Uncontrollable crying, anger, other emotions
  • Lack of emotion

Stress Management: Developing a Healthy Menu

Since stress is unavoidable, developing a healthy stress management plan is a great defense. A healthy stress management plan offers positive and productive choices for creating buffers against stress and handling stress that comes along. One way to look at a stress management plan is by comparing it to a healthy menu of choices. It can be very helpful to evaluate what is on your current menu and think of ways to make it more nourishing. Step one, then, is to evaluate what kind of stress choices you currently make now. See the list below to get started, if you like. Start with positive and productive first. Take note of what positive and productive choices work for you now and keep up the good work. Then look on the negative and nonproductive list (everyone has at least one!). Next, see where you can replace or reduce these items. This sounds a lot simpler than it actually is. This process isn't always easy and doesn't happen over night. The idea is progress, not perfection. If you having trouble with this process, seek the help of someone in your support network like a friend or relative. Don't be afraid to seek a support group, or meet with a representative of your Employee Assistance Program, pastor or professional mental health worker. They may have some objective suggestions you have not considered.

Stress Management Menu Choices



Alcohol: Using alcohol to hide feelings and run away from your problems.

Assertiveness: Stating what you need and want; being able to say “no” in a calm and respectful manner.

Drugs: Abuse of over-the-counter or illicit drugs to hide your feelings or run away from problems.

Deal with conflicts: Be able to forgive or admit you are wrong; seek “win-win” situations.

Eating: Using food to deal with your emotions; skipping meals or overeating.

Exercise: Pursue some form of fitness; burn stress chemicals.

Tobacco: Relief of tension through smoking.

Relaxation: Try deep breathing, meditation and exercises to relax muscle tension.

Isolate: Avoiding the situation, keeping your feelings to yourself.

Contact: Be a good, genuine listener; reach out to others.

Worrying: Fret over small things; make everything a catastrophe.

Problem-focused: Take responsibility with you can; get help when you need it. Deal with problems directly.

Find fault: Complain, criticize, judge.

Organize: Create order; don’t let things pile up.

Tantrums: Scream, swear, mope.

Reliable: Take a new perspective; look for the silver lining.

Revenge: Get even, sarcasm, one-upmanship.

Flexibility: Be open to change.

Illness: Constantly complain and focus on discomfort.

Self-care: Strive for self-improvement and self-empowerment. Energize work and play.

Stubbornness: Be rigid, never admit you’re wrong (“my way or the highway”).

Spirituality: Put faith into action; seek connection to others.

Shut down: Get nothing done.

Time management: Focus on priorities; work smart.

Idle time: Not enough to do, boredom.

Hobbies: Creative outlets; write, paint, read, etc.

All business.

Sense of humor: Release through laughter, smiles.
