What Can You Do About Caregiver Stress?

  • Evaluate the situation.
    • Are you providing care at the appropriate site?
    • Does this person require more than you are capable of?
    • Are you worried about safety?
    • Are you expecting too much of yourself?
  • Gather your family and friends.
    • Who is available to help?
    • Are they reliable and trustworthy?
    • Accept help when offered.
    • Be specific, tell people exactly what you need.
  • What community resources are available to you?
    • What in-home assistance is possible?
    • What equipment or technology would assist you?
    • Call local, state and federal programs for assistance.
    • Contact your local church and community programs for volunteers.
  • Arrange respite care and take a regular break.
    • Take time for self care, relaxing and your own pleasure.
    • Go for a walk, to the movies, or get a massage.
  • Find support and conversation wherever you can.
    • Join a support group.
    • Ask your friends to call you regularly, advise them not to wait until you call - you won't have time.
    • Read books about caregiving stories.
    • Internet offers information as well as on-line support groups.
    • Find a caregiver organization, ask for newsletters.
