Relieving Stress |

Most of us are sharply aware of the mental impact of stress, but we should also keep in mind that stress can adversely affect our bodies, too. Here are some quick, easy and healthful ways to relieve stress.
- Breath – Deep breathing is a quick, easy and effective way to de-stress. Simply breath in slowly and evenly. Next time you want to breath deeply remember “S.E.L.F.”: to increase the calming effect make sure each breath is Soft, Even, Long and Full.
- Talk – Find someone with whom you can talk about your problems. If you are reluctant to share your problems, it can be therapeutic just to talk and be social, providing a much needed break from your worries.
- Laugh – Laugh at a humorous movie or book or share a joke with friends. Laughing releases beneficial biochemicals that can make you feel better.
- Relax – This is often times easier said than done, but if you set time aside to relax, your mind can have the time to process your problems and perhaps come up with some solutions. Five minutes with a cup of tea can make all the difference.
- Meditate – Simply counting your breath—mentally count “one” for the in breath, mentally say “and” for the out breath up to a count of ten—then start your count over again. If you lose count you are probably thinking too much and need to begin at “one” again. Start at three minutes and work your way up to more. This is an easy way to begin clearing your mind in a meditative way.
- Help a friend or volunteer – Helping someone else not only keeps you active, it also takes you away from your problems and may help put them in perspective.
- Take time – Make time for yourself and do something relaxing that you enjoy. Make sure this time is free from any interruptions.
- Exercise – Exercise not only helps you deal with the immediate stress that you are feeling, it can also help your body be better prepared for future stress.
- Try something new – Visiting a new place or taking part in a new activity can give you the new perspective that you need.
- Do something creative – Write a poem, draw a picture, write a story, play an instrument; all of these things can help you focus on something other than your problem, while doing something that you enjoy.
- Take a walk – Walking combines quiet time, a meditative rhythm and exercise all in one activity.
