Clinical Services at Rush Limb Preservation Team

Physicians at Rush are highly skilled in providing limb preservation services to the Great Lakes region and beyond. With surgeons representing every orthopedic subspecialty, Rush is a leader in orthopedics for the Midwest. The expertise of the Center for Limb Preservation staff is broadened with the close support of Medical Center community.

The Center for Limb Preservation staff comprises employed and private-practice physicians on the medical staff at Rush University Medical Center:

Steven Gitelis, MD, a specialist in orthopedic oncology, has years of experience in limb preservation and special expertise in bone substitutes and bone transplantation. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College, Rush University, and served his orthopedic surgery residency at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital. Gitelis performed orthopedic oncology fellowships at Rizzoli Institute, Bologna, Italy, and at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He is associate chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and professor of orthopedic surgery at Rush Medical College. Gitelis also serves as the director of the Bone and Tissue Bank of the Regional Organ Bank of Illinois and is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Mark Cohen, MD, a specialist in microsurgery of the hand, has special expertise in upper extremity trauma, replantation and soft tissue reconstruction. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston and served his orthopedic surgery residency at University of California, San Diego. He performed his hand and microvascular surgery fellowship at the Indiana Hand Center. Cohen is associate professor of orthopedic surgery and director of the hand and elbow section of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush Medical College. He also is board-certified in hand and microvascular surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

John Fernandez, MD, a specialist in microsurgery of the hand, has special expertise in hand trauma, replantation and soft tissue reconstruction. He received his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and served his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He performed a hand and microvascular surgery fellowship at the Indiana Hand Center. Fernandez is assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Rush Medical College and director of microsurgery, Midwest Orthopedics Hand and Shoulder Center at Rush. Fernandez also is a hand and microvascular surgery attending physician at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He is board-certified in hand and microvascular surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
