Founded in 1978, the Johnston R. Bowman Health Center is currently the only Stroke Specialty Rehabilitation certified facility in Chicago. We are located on the campus of Rush University, a leading academic medical center and Stroke Center of Excellence. Through this collaboration, Bowman Center has become a recognized leader in comprehensive stroke rehabilitation. Our Day Rehab program is another highlight to the Bowman Center's holistic program that helps people recover from the effects of stroke and return to their everyday activities.
The mission of the Johnston R. Bowman Health center is to provide specialized medical and rehabilitative care for our patients. Our educational and research endeavors, community service programs and relationships with other hospitals are dedicated to enhancing excellence in patient care for diverse communities of the Chicago area now and in the future.
Every day and with each patient interaction we live our values of innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence. This translates into a Magnet-accredited professional nursing staff board certified in rehabilitation medicine, current research studies into best practices that help patients return to optimum health and a strong interdisciplinary team approach to patient-centered care.
Individually Designed Programs

In addition to excellent stroke rehabilitation care, we have inpatient rehabilitation programs individually designed for a range of conditions from head injury, brain lesions and Parkinson's disease to limb loss, joint replacement and arthritis. Our collaboration with Rush University's nationally acclaimed physicians sets us apart from other rehabilitation programs in our ability to provide the best possible care for people with complex needs.
While in our program, patients can expect an active schedule of therapies based on individual needs. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are at the core of a day's schedule. Our holistic approach to rehabilitation includes psychology and chaplain services, as well as diet counseling and recreational therapy. Social workers will help you transition home, providing resources and choice for any ongoing needs.
Team Approach
All rehabilitation care at the Bowman Center is coordinated by a physiatrist (a physician with specialized training in rehabilitative medicine) and discussed frequently by the team at team meetings and family conferences designed to maximize family involvement. Each member of the team is available to answer all questions and address any concerns. You can contact us at (312) 942-2791 or by email for more information or to schedule a tour.
