Clinical Services at Rush Neonatology
Program Description

The Section of Neonatology at Rush Children's Hospital provides comprehensive care for critically ill newborns and infants, including consultation, transport and intensive care. Our neonatologists — available 24 hours a day — are all board-certified and actively involved in cutting-edge treatment and research. We take a family-focused approach to the care of high-risk infants, allowing families to be complete partners in care.

Our 55-bed facility is a individual room model equipped to provide care for the complete range of neonatal and infant critical illnesses, including all types of respiratory, surgical, cardiac, genetic, renal, neurological, hematological and metabolic diseases. Some of our areas of expertise include:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Respiratory distress
  • Prematurity
  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (severe injury to the digestive system of the premature infant)
  • Intraventricular hemorrhage and other neurological disorders

Services Provided
  • Neonatal High-Risk Follow-Up ClinicA longitudinal, developmental program for the evaluation of high-risk infants from birth to age 5. 
  • Fetal and Neonatal Medicine Program
    Providing informed options and quality care as well as compassion and support for parents facing hard decisions related to a fetus or newborn with medical anomalies.
  • Rush Perinatal Center: Providing transfer services for high-risk mothers and infants, either from within the Rush Perinatal Network or from hospitals in the Northwestern Illinois Region. Rush is one of 10 perinatal centers designated by the State of Illinois as Level III units. The Section of Neonatology (Department of Pediatrics) operates the Rush Perinatal Center in collaboration with the Section of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology).
  • Apnea Program: A referral service for infants and children who may require home monitoring.
  • Support services for families, including:
    • Parent education/support groups
    • Discharge planning
    • Coping aids
    • CPR training
    • Lactation consultation

Clinical Team

Rush Children's Hospital provides 24-hour coverage by a board-certified neonatologist, with immediate availability for consultations and referrals. A staff of neonatologists, neonatal nurses, nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists is available for providing in-service education. A dedicated social work staff is available to help families dealing with crisis.
