Genetic Disorder Diagnosis and Care |

Program Description The Section of Genetics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, provides a full range of services for the diagnosis, counseling and treatment of patients (infants, children, adults and pregnant women) who have or are concerned about genetic and congenital disorders.
Diagnostic genetic testing is conducted for congenital malformations, chromosome disorders, mental retardation, learning disabilities, infertility, miscarriages, paternity, metabolic and molecular disorders. Genetic services are available for all pediatric, prenatal and adult genetic disorders.
Services Provided
The Section of Genetics provides comprehensive services related to genetic, inherited or multifactorial disorders, including the following:
- Genetic and reproductive counseling
- Treatment and risk reduction strategies
- Prenatal and postnatal testing through chromosome and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies, biochemical tests and DNA (gene) analysis
- Evaluation for hereditary breast and colon cancers
- Evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for metabolic disease such as PKU, galactosemia, disorders of fat metabolism, etc.
- Patient and family education about genetic risk
- Support groups for families facing chromosome syndrome, metabolic disorders, phenylketonuria (PKU), Huntington disease and Fragile X syndrome.
Clinical Team
- Paul Wong, MD, MSc, is a board-certified pediatrician and board-certified geneticist. He is director of the Section of Genetics and professor of pediatrics and internal medicine. Well-known internationally for his research contribution in biochemical genetic disorders, Wong is a member of many academic societies and has published more than 70 original papers in scientific and medical journals.
- Wei-Tong Hsu, MD, is a board-certified cytogeneticist with extensive experience in cancer cytogenetics and cytogenetics in infants, children and pregnancies. She has multiple publications in cancer cytogenetics.
- Kisha Johnson, MS, CGC, is a board-certified genetic counselor.
- Amy Knight Johnson, MS, CGC is a board-certified genetic counselor.
