Richard Byrne, MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Medical Director, University Neurosurgery, began his medical career at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. During medical school, he completed an externship in head trauma at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Upon receipt of his medical degree in 1991, Dr. Byrne went on to complete a surgical internship and residencies in neurological surgery at Rush and at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, where he served as chief resident. In 1997, he was appointed assistant professor of neurosurgery at Rush Medical College.
Dr. Byrne is highly regarded for his expertise in the surgical treatment of epilepsy and seizure causing brain tumors and has published several articles and book chapters on the treatment of these disorders. Dr. Byrne also maintains a special interest in neurovascular and spine surgery and is board certified in neurosurgery. He is an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and is an associate fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
