Healthy Pregnancy Newsletter - Glossaryacne neonatorum (Also called baby acne.) - pimples on newborn skin common in the first month.

baby blues - temporary changes in mood after the birth of a baby that include tearfulness, anxiety, disappointment, and restlessness

bilirubin - substance formed when red blood cells break down and are excreted by the liver. Too much bilirubin in the blood causes jaundice.

bonding - the attachment process that occurs between a newborn baby and the parents.

circumcision - a surgical procedure to remove the skin covering the end of the penis.

hemorrhoids - swollen blood vessels in and around the anus that cause itching, pain, and sometimes bleeding.

hyperbilirubinemia - the build-up of bilirubin in the blood.

immunization - vaccine to prevent diseases.

jaundice - a yellow coloring of the skin and/or eyes that is caused by too much bilirubin in the blood.

Kegel exercises - pelvic floor exercises that help tone the muscles in the vagina and perineum.

lanugo - fine, downy hair that covers the fetus until shortly before or after birth.

lochia - the vaginal discharge that occurs following childbirth. During the first few days, the lochia is a bloody discharge. Over the next few weeks the lochia changes to brown and then to a whitish discharge and the amount markedly decreases.

meconium - a sticky, greenish-black substance that forms in the intestines during fetal development and is the first bowel movement of a newborn.

Mongolian spots - blue or purple-colored splotches on the baby's lower back and buttocks common in dark-skinned babies.

Moro reflex - movement of arms and legs that occurs when a newborn is startled by a loud sound or movement.

moulding - elongation of the shape of a baby's head due to delivery through the birth canal.

neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) - a special care nursery that uses advanced technology and trained health professionals to care for sick and premature newborns.

port wine stain - a flat, pink, red, or purple colored birthmark.

postpartum depression - clinical depression following childbirth characterized by extreme sadness, fears, guilt, severe mood swings, uncontrolled crying, appetite changes, sleep disturbances, and other symptoms.

stork bite (Also called salmon patch.) - small pink or red patches often found on a baby's eyelids, between the eyes, upper lip, and back of the neck.

strawberry hemangioma - a bright or dark red, raised or swollen, bumpy area on the skin of a baby or child.

vernix caseosa (Also called vernix.) - a white substance that covers the skin of the fetus (while inside the uterus) and helps to protect the fetus.
