The Department of Urology offers a five-year residency training program, the objectives of which are:
- to provide residents with a wide range of experience in all realms of urologic diagnoses and therapies
- to prepare residents for all aspects of the practice of urology, as well as for subspecialization should they so choose
- to prepare residents for certification by the American Board of Urology.
Diagnostic imaging and pathology are taught through specific conferences and daily patient care involving interactions with specialists in uroradiology and uropathology. Uropathology is reviewed daily through inpatient clinical cases, with a resident evaluation of both gross and histologic pathologic specimens. In addition, transrectal ultrasonography, transrectal ultrasound biopsy, and ultrasound of the bladder for residual urine and testicular ultrasound are taught in both the adult and pediatric urologic clinic rotations.
Overall responsibility for the success of the training program lies with the chairperson of the department. The program director is responible for coordinating the program objectives with various departmental section directors. He is assisted by the chief resident in the development of schedules detailing assignment of residents to departmental sections.
Resident performances are evaluated by individual members of the sections and the program director, and discussed with the residents on an ongoing basis. A semi-annual review is available to all residents on request.
The training program tries to strike a balance between graduation requirements and increased independent responsibility, while maintaining the highest quality of patient care. Residents are supervised by members of the attending staff in a manner that does not stifle the training experience.
Outpatient clinics are supervised on a one-to-one basis. In-hospital patient care activities and surgical care of patients involve both a learning and a teaching experience, depending on level of training and expertise. All teaching is supervised by the attending faculty.
