Research
The program has a strong commitment to basic science, clinical and educational research. All residents are expected to participate in a basic science or clinical research project and are encouraged to present and publish their results in a recognized forum. Those residents interested in an academic career are provided the opportunity to spend at least one year in a basic science laboratory. A longer research experience is available for those who desire it, and some residents have even obtained advanced degrees. Residents have spent their research period on a broad array of subjects including tumor immunology, wound healing, minimally invasive surgery and hyperthermic resuscitation. Areas of active investigation by faculty include tumor and transplant molecular and immunobiology, the role of adhesion molecules in metastases, tumor angiogenesis, cryoablation and laser therapy for primary and metastatic disease, pathogenesis of thyroid cancer and the role of translocation in the development of secondary pancreatic infections.
