Rush University Medical Center is a large university tertiary medical center with approximately 850 active beds. Fellows are exposed to a broad range of vascular and non-vascular interventions. The medical center has strong Departments of Transplant Surgery (kidney, liver, and heart), Reproduction, Nephrology, and General Surgery. The fellowship can be characterized as a clinically active program with approximately 3500 services per year.

The Special Procedures area boasts state of the art equipment with the upcoming installation of three new interventional suites and the upgrading of a fourth suite which is four years old. All rooms will be 1024 digital subtraction with angio packages. The installation of two high capacity spiral CT scanners with angio packages will allow extensive experience with this modality.

The fellowship is ACGME approved. The faculty (Three full-time) each have passed CAQ's.

The section of Interventional Radiology is clinically oriented with a primary emphasis on patient care. Nevertheless, academic production by the section is generous, with the full expectation that each fellow participate in at least one paper.

The section is presently involved in a number of prospective randomized trials both with Institutional Review Board and FDA approval. Active areas of interest include dialysis graft intervention, mechanical and pharmacologic thrombectomy and thrombolysis, vascular access, vascular stent placement, as well as TIPS.
