The Breast Imaging Fellowship at Rush encompasses all aspects of breast imaging, including screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound and interventional breast procedures (ultrasound-guided FNA and core biopsy, stereotactic core biopsy, needle localization and galactography). Breast MRI is performed as well.
The Rush Breast Imaging Center is a high-volume, state-of-the-art facility. We currently have six new GE Senographe DMR Plus units, one of which has spot digital capability. Screening studies are performed on two new Siemens 3000 Nova units. Two Acuson Sequoia Ultrasound units are available for diagnostic use and procedures. A Fischer prone table is used for stereotactic procedures. The Biopsys Mammotome system is available for stereotactic and ultrasound-guided core biopsies.
We have 12 well-trained, dedicated mammographic technologists who have been recruited from throughout the city. These professionals are truly a vital component of our operation. A dedicated procedure/patient tracking coordinator, nurse, film vault personnel and several technical/physician aides are also essential to our operation. Patient scheduling is handled via our front office for patient convenience, as well as controlling flexibility in the schedule. We have same day/next day appointments for mammograms, as well as procedures to accommodate emergent cases.
There are currently five full-time and two part-time mammographers in our section. This provides for a wide range of opinions and styles, which is helpful in any fellowship-training program. Our section offers ample opportunities for teaching and research, although there are no requirements in this regard.
