Graduate Medical Education
Residency in Psychology
Application and Selection Procedures

Residency appointments begin on July 1. A total of eight residents are selected annually, with two in the child and adolescent track, four in the health psychology track, and two in the neuropsychology track. Eligibility requires completion of an APA-accredited university program in clinical or counseling psychology, including written approval from the university Director of Training. A form for this approval is included in the application. Doctoral candidacy (preliminary examinations passed, course-work completed, dissertation proposal approved) is viewed as an important asset during the selection process. We especially encourage members of minority groups to apply.

Application materials must be received by November 20th. These include the application cover page, a hard copy of the AAPI*, a current graduate school transcript, 3 letters of recommendation, and a curriculum vita. Please enclose a stamped self-addressed post card for notification that your application is complete. We also require a $15 application fee so that we can process the large volume of applications we receive. Please make checks payable to Rush Medical Center.

After November 20th, faculty review applications and invite a subset of applicants to come for an interview in mid-late January. The interview notification date is December 15th. Selection criteria include goodness-of-fit between the applicant's interests and experience and the program; letters of recommendation; type of graduate program, including course work and grades; and doctoral candidacy. A solid research background and near-completion or completion of the dissertation prior to residency also enhance an application.

Selection policies and procedures follow the guidelines of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). This procedure will be governed by established APPIC policy. This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC Policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
