Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the more frequently questions regarding our Pain Medicine Fellowship Training Program are answered below. If you need any additional information or clarification regarding our program, please feel free to contact us.
What is the application deadline?
The deadline for submittal of Pain Medicine fellowship applications is November 30th.
How many Pain fellowship positions do you offer?
We have four one-year fellowship positions available. Applications will be accepted one year in advance of the proposed starting date (July 1) of the Fellowship. The program has a rolling admissions policy. Candidates can be offered positions as soon as their applications and personal interviews with the Rush Department of Anesthesiology Faculty have been completed. Applications are closed as soon as all the positions for a given year are filled.
What are work hours and call schedule for Pain Medicine Fellows enrolled in the program?
The policy regarding the schedule for pain medicine fellows is as follows:
- On average, the fellow has one full day (out of seven) free of program duties.
- The fellow is not on call more than every third night.
- The fellow is provided with adequate backup if patient care needs creates fatigue sufficient to jeopardize patient care or fellow welfare during or following on-call periods.
- During on-call hours, fellows are provided with adequate sleeping, lounge, and food facilities.
- Support services are available so that fellows do not spend an inordinate amount of time in non-educational activities that can be properly discharged by other personnel.
Do you accept International Medical Graduates?
Yes, provided that the applicant meets certain requirements. For example, the individual must have a current ECFMG Certificate and USMLE I, II, III above the 50th percentile (greater than 220). For additional information about these requirements, please contact us.
What are the selection criteria for applicants?
Applicants are chosen to be interviewed based on a combination of medical school performance, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, and ABA/ASA in-training exam scores. Applications are then further evaluated by members of the Admissions Committee who make the final decision to interview. Offers to join the program are based on both the quality of the application and the interview.
