Graduate Medical Education
Residency in Orthopedic Surgery

Program Schedule

The first postgraduate year is a rotating internship with exposure to:

  • general surgery
  • neurosurgery
  • cardiovascular surgery
  • plastic surgery
  • surgical intensive care
  • rheumatology
  • diagnostic radiology
  • selected medical rotations

During the second and third postgraduate years, the resident serves as a junior house officer on the orthopedic services at Rush University Medical Center and the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

A six-month elective experience in orthopedic research is available during the third postgraduate year.

During the fourth year, residents spend six months in a pediatric orthopedic rotation at Shriners Hospital for Children, Chicago Unit, with some of the remaining time serving as a senior resident on the Fracture Service at Stroger Hospital.

The fifth postgraduate year is a chief resident position with advanced surgical and patient care opportunities at Rush University Medical Center.
