Graduate Medical Education
Residency in Neurosurgery

Core Conferences

Educational conferences are critical to a successful academic program. All residents are required to attend all conferences unless on extramural assignment, research, vacation or other specifically excused absence. There are two mandatory block teaching times, one on Wednesday, from 7:00-8:30 a.m. and one on Thursdays from 1:00-6:00 p.m.

Basic science conferences feature speakers from all areas of basic neuroscience. In addition to preparing residents to successfully deal with Part I of the neurosurgical board examination, these conferences stimulate and encourage further study and suggest topics of research.

Critical Care/Neurosurgical Intensive Care conferences curriculum is equally balanced between neurological and the medical aspects of the management of the critically-ill patient.

The invited lecture series features nationally or internationally renowned neurospecialists. Each Visiting Professor day includes radiology case presentations with the residents followed by a formal presentation given by the Visiting Professor.

Journal club explores published medical literature; residents present topics and literature review and receive feedback from faculty.

Neuropathology conference bolsters the classic methods of teaching neuroanatomy by incorporating modern imaging technologies and software.

Neuroradiology conferences are held daily with the attending neurosurgical and neuroradiology staff to review and discuss studies from the day in the context of decision making and patient care.

Neurosurgery/Neurology grand rounds emphasize clinical presentation, comprehensive differential diagnosis and histopathological correlation.

Surgical neuroanatomy conference explores various surgical approaches to all areas of the brain, skull base and spine.
