Application Process

Each year, there are 1-2 positions in the Department of Neurosurgery residency program filled through the Neurological Surgery Matching Program. Though it is an integrated program with the Department of General Surgery, applicants are still required to participate in the NRMP application process.

We only accept applications for our residency program through the AAMC/ERAS application system. Applications to our program will be accepted beginning September 1, 2008.

Be very specific when describing your problem. Include:

• exact wording of error messages (cut and paste if possible)
• information about the type of computer being used (manufacturer, processor, amount of RAM, available hard disk space)
• the operating system (e.g., Windows 2000, Windows XP)

Interview Process

Each application received from the Neurological Surgery Matching Program is reviewed by the program director, an attending and a resident who have been selected for this process.

Applications are screened with attention paid to:

• performance during the preclinical and clinical years
• USMLE 1 exam scores
• USLME 2 exam scores when available
• Dean's letters
• letters of recommendation
• extracurricular activities

The screening process does not consider gender, sexual orientation, age, race, religion, ethnic origin, economic status, surname, veteran status or place of residence.

The residency coordinator notifies each applicant selected by e-mail. Dates for interviews are provided in the e-mail. Candidates should notify the residency coordinator of their desired interview date either by email or phone.

Interviews are conducted on Thursdays from approximately 8 a.m. to 5-6 p.m., followed by a small reception. The day will consist of interviews with the attendings, a tour of the institution, lunch with our residents and resident teaching conferences.

Shortly after the final interviews, the department attendings and residents will meet to review the candidates and determine the rank list order.
