| Rotation
Schedule
Usually the two years are spent at Rush. During the first year of Fellowship,
the Fellow spends all of his/her time at Rush. During the second year,
the Fellow may exceptionally spend part of the time at another institution.
The first year is primarily clinical training and clinical research. The
second year is primarily teaching and research, clinical or laboratory.
Percent of Time in Various Activities
During the first year of Fellowship, the primary responsibilities are
clinical. The Movement Disorders Group (6 specialists) see approximately
three-hundred new and two thousand or more return outpatients every year.
The Fellow sees patients in the outpatient clinic with each attending
specialist, and his own clinic one-half day weekly. Rounds usually occur
between 9 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. daily. Attendance is expected at Neurology
Grand Rounds, Movement Disorders Research meetings and Video Rounds which
occur for one hour each weekly. The remainder of the time is spent in
educational activities, research and reading. It is anticipated that a
Fellow will spend approximately fifty hours weekly in the department managing
clinical or research responsibilities and another ten to twenty hours
a week in reading and educational activities. During the second year,
there is less direct clinical work and more emphasis on research and individualized
programs.
Relationship to Current Residency
All Rush Neurology residents currently rotate through the Movement Disorders
Clinic and assist in the management of Movement Disorders inpatients.
The Fellow has a far more intensive exposure to movement disorders inpatients
than can be obtained in a neurology residency. In addition, the Fellow
assumes some responsibility for education of the residents in Movement
Disorders and acts as a liaison between resident and attending physician,
particularly in the day-to-day management of movement disorders inpatients.
Certificate of Completion
A certificate of completion is issued by the Office of Graduate Medical
Education upon completion of the Movement Disorder Fellowship program.
