Didactics -- Conference Schedule
Core Conference Descriptions
Morning Report Monday-Friday (7:00-8:00 a.m.)
This one-hour conference, which is mandatory for floor senior residents and elective for senior residents on subspecialty or other rotations, is a forum to present and review diagnosis and management of patients admitted on the previous call night. The moderators will include General Internists and Sub-Specialists. On Mondays the moderator will be the Chairman of the Department of Medicine. Interns are expected attend Monday Morning Report.
Work Rounds Monday-Friday (9:00-11:00 a.m.)
This is an opportunity for the team to reconvene, present the new patients, and round on all of the patients at the bedside. The team, accompanied by nursing and a clinical pharmacist when available, determines the care plan of each patient.
Attending Rounds Tuesday, Thursday & Friday (8:00-9:00 a.m.)
This educational activity involves the entire team. The team meets with a teaching attending for one hour to review interesting cases. There will be one attending assigned to each team. The focus of this activity is to review general medical care of the hospitalized patient, emphasizing history taking, and physical exam skills at the bedside, as well as appropriate diagnostic testing and management.
Noon Conference Monday, Tuesday & Thursday (12:00-1:00 p.m.)
This conference is mandatory for all internal medicine housestaff. Lunch is provided for all noon conferences. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lectures will be given by attendings in the department of medicine, as well as other departments such as OB-GYN, Dermatology and Urology, reviewing core topics in medicine. On Mondays, a third year medicine resident is required to lead a clinicopathologic conference. On Fridays, noon conferences are for interns only.
Chairman's Rounds Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday (1:30-3:00 p.m.)
These rounds will occur weekly on each floor and will be moderated by departmental leadership including chairpersons, program directors, and other senior department faculty. A case will be presented by one of the interns on the team. The entire team including both senior residents, all interns and the medical students are expected to be present. The cases are selected for their uniqueness, presentations, interesting physical findings or diagnostic challenges.
Sign-Out Rounds Monday-Friday (3:00-3:30 p.m.)
The team reconvenes at the end of the day. The interns sign out to the senior residents reviewing pertinent events of the day, focusing on important developments and issues to be aware of "on-call". The sign-out must be thorough and complete to assure quality of patient care. This is also an important educational exercise for residents and students.
