Call Schedule
All house officers are on call no more than every fourth night on the medical floors. They are responsible for making their own call schedules. This schedule must be given to the chief residents two months prior to the start of each rotation. Per national requirements, a house officer cannot be on call more frequently then every third night
Interns have one day off each week, which will vary depending on the continuity clinic schedules of co-interns and senior residents. An intern is not expected to take his or her day off on their clinic day, nor should they take the first Friday of each rotation off because this coincides with the senior resident switch day. This can be made up later in the rotation at a date agreed upon with their senior and co-interns.
Senior residents have a total of four days off each rotation while on general medical floors and call elective rotations (Nephrology, Infectious Disease, and Hematology); usually one Saturday, one Sunday, and one full weekend. Each medical floor must have one of its two designated senior residents present for rounds on each weekend day (and holiday days). While on non-call subspecialty rotations and ambulatory care experiences, weekend responsibilities are decided by the attending physicians on each of these respective services. Residents have at least four whole days off each subspecialty rotations and have all weekends off during ambulatory care experiences.
Interns switch rotations on Tuesdays, and senior residents switch on Fridays. Exceptions may occur at the beginning and the end of the academic year and around holidays.
Vacation is not taken during floor months or the final week of the academic year. An exception is made for preliminary year trainees who may schedule end of academic year vacation time.
