RUSH Gastroenterology Fellow Position Summary/Job Description
FY 07/08

The position of Gastroenterology fellow involves evaluation and management of patients with a diagnosis of digestive diseases and liver disorders and formal educational and research activities. All of the activities are supervised by the attending teaching staff. Provision of care provided by the fellow is commensurate with the physician's level of advancement and competence. This position is for 3 years in the combined gastroenterology/hepatology fellowship program.

Position Duties: Fellow (R4 - year 1)

  1. develop and perfect primary care and sub-specialty skills in the care of gastroenterology and hepatology patients in the outpatient setting as well as in the inpatient/consult environment
  2. develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of digestive diseases
  3. polish those interpersonal skills which optimize a compassionate and humanistic interaction with patients, families and colleagues
  4. develop an understanding of cost containment issues in the changing environment of managed care
  5. develop and initiate research projects (with the guidance of faculty) - clinical or laboratory
  6. demonstrate technical skills in endoscopic procedures including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy with polypectomy, endoscopic biopsy, dilation, liver biopsy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and control of hemorrhage.
  7. attend and participate in educational activities - journal clubs, didactic lectures, multidisciplinary medical-surgical conference, research conference, gastroenterology and internal medicine grand rounds conferences
  8. maintain current state licensure
  9. perfect teaching skills through supervision of residents and medical students
  10. learn to critically analyze medical literature
  11. be aware of ethical issues which arise in end-of-life care
  12. work towards completion of the core clinical competencies program.

Qualifications: Fellow must have completed training in Internal Medicine at an accredited school in the U.S. and be board eligible in Internal Medicine.

Gastroenterology Fellow (R5 - year 2) Job Description

Position Summary/Job Description: The position of Gastroenterology fellow involves evaluation and management of patients with a diagnosis of gastroenterologic and liver disorders and formal educational and research activities. All of the activities are supervised by the attending teaching staff. Provision of care provided by the fellow is commensurate with the physician's level of advancement and competence. This position is for year two (first year already completed) of the three year combined Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship program.

Position Duties: Fellow (R5 - year 2)

  1. demonstrate and perfect primary care and sub-specialty skills in the care of patients with gastroenterological and hepatologic disorders in the outpatient setting as well as in the inpatient/consult environment
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of digestive diseases
  3. polish those interpersonal skills which optimize a compassionate and humanistic interaction with patients, families and colleagues
  4. understanding cost containment issues in the changing environment of managed care
  5. document research project efforts - clinical or laboratory
  6. demonstrate technical skills in endoscopic procedures including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy with polypectomy, endoscopic biopsy, dilation, liver biopsy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and control of hemorrhage
  7. attend and participate in educational activities - journal clubs, didactic conference, multidisciplinary medical-surgical conference, research conference, gastroenterology and internal medicine grand rounds conferences
  8. maintain current state licensure
  9. perfect teaching skills through supervision of residents and medical students
  10. demonstrate and perfect skills in pain management and palliative care
  11. perfect ability to critically analyze medical literature
  12. continue working toward completion of the core clinical competencies program.

Qualifications: Fellow must have satisfactorily completed first year of training in the Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship program.

Gastroenterology Fellow (R6 - year 3) Job Description

Position Summary: The position of Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellow involves evaluation and management of patients with a diagnosis of digestive disorders and formal educational and research activities. All of the activities are supervised by the attending teaching staff. Provision of care provided by the fellow is commensurate with the physician's level of advancement and competence. This position is for year three (first and second year already completed) of the three year combined Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship program.

Position Duties: Fellow (R6 - year 3)

  1. demonstrate and perfect primary care and sub-specialty skills in the care of patients with digestive diseases patients in the outpatient setting as well as in the inpatient/consult environment
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of digestive disease care
  3. refine those interpersonal skills which optimize a compassionate and humanistic interaction with patients, families and colleagues
  4. understanding cost containment issues in the changing environment of managed care
  5. document and present research project efforts - clinical or laboratory
  6. demonstrate technical skills in endoscopic procedures including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy with polypectomy, endoscopic biopsy, dilation, liver biopsy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiographic pancreatography, endoscopic ultrasonograpy (optional), esophageal and anorectal manometry motility and control of hemorrhage
  7. attend and participate in educational activities - journal clubs, didactics, multidisciplinary medical-surgical conference, , research conference, gastroenterology and internal medicine grand rounds conferences
  8. maintain current state licensure
  9. demonstrate teaching skills through supervision of residents and medical students
  10. demonstrate and perfect skills in pain management and palliative care and complete the core clinical competencies
  11. perfect and demonstrate the ability to critically analyze medical literature
  12. develop skills in nutritional support and evaluation

Qualifications: Fellow must have satisfactorily completed the first and second year of training in the Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship program.
