Conferences
Several are combined with the Hepatology Section.
Gastroenterology Pathology Conference (Fellows and Attendings)
Monthly one-hour meeting held with GI pathologist. Review of cases submitted during the month with clinical summaries supplied by the fellows and attendings. A review of normal pathology is also provided. GI and liver cases reviewed.

Hepatology Pathology Conference (Fellows and Attendings)
Monthly one-hour meeting. The pathologist presents liver pathology cases. Fellows present the clinical aspects of the cases.

Medical/Surgical Conference
Weekly one-hour conference with general surgeons. Three to four cases are presented by the surgical service, GI service and Cook County GI service. Discussions focus on the unique surgical issues involved in each case.

Digestive Diseases Grand Rounds (Fellows, Attendings, Residents, Medical Students, Nurses from both Rush and Cook County Hospital)
Weekly one-hour formal presentation of a pre-approved case by the fellow followed by a didactic review of the pertinent topic. One of the fellows, on a rotating basis, presents a selected case for 30 minutes leading to a differential diagnosis with participation of fellows and attendings. The presentation by the fellow of the highlights is based on extensive literature search. The fellow receives guidance by a TA on medical informatics, usually by using the computers and facilities provided by the library to be able to prepare for this conference. This is a joint conference with Cook County Hospital. Approximately, six times per year this conference is a one hour didactic held by a visiting professor. This is then followed by a one-hour review of interesting cases with the visiting professor and the fellows.

Fellow Didactic Conference (Fellows)
Weekly one hour facilitated discussion with a single attending of reading assignments using Yamada as the source text or review of learning materials such as CD-ROM based lectures. Board review is done several times a year by reviewing question sets.

Research Conference (Fellows and Attendings)
A one hour weekly conference to review and update fellow's research projects/proposals while on research elective time. At times the conference is used to conduct a critical review of possible and ongoing projects is also. Used as a preparatory forum for those projects accepted for presentation at local and national meetings. Occasional guest speakers in the basic sciences.

Journal Club (Fellows and Attendings)
Bimonthly one-hour review of article(s) presented by two fellows; one from Rush and one from Cook County Hospital. On rotating basis. Fellows present three to four times a year. Papers are selected from major journals and presented with background information, description of materials and methods, then results and discussion. Two articles are usually presented in depth. During this conference the fellow receives instructions regarding critical assessment of medical literature and biostatistics.

Resident Conference (Fellows & On-service Residents)
Daily one-hour discussion conducted by service attending with residents and fellow on service using patients on the service and/or the resident curriculum as a study or topic guide. Attendings lead a discussion of selected topics in both gastroenterology using cases, slide sets, prepared lectures or question sets. When applicable, the residents are expected to answer using the review articles supplied with the curriculum guide.
