| The Second Otolaryngology Year R3
At the second year level in otolaryngology, residents will rotate through
affiliated hospitals. During a two-month rotation at Stroger County Hospital,
residents develop their clinical skills in general otolaryngology with
an emphasis on facial trauma. Residents are responsible for patients on
the inpatient unit, operating room, outpatient clinic and emergency room.
The Children’s Memorial Hospital three-month rotation provides residents
with an intensive experience in pediatric otolaryngology in addition to
their experience in pediatric otolaryngology at Rush throughout the R2
- R5 years. At Children Memorial Hospital, the residents work with senior
residents, faculty and fellows and acquire skills in the care of pediatric
otolaryngology patients in the operating room, outpatient clinic and emergency
room.
The remaining seven months of the R3 year are spent on the Rush Otolaryngology
Service. The R3 resident is expected to develop proficiency in performing
aerodigestive tract endoscopy, urgent/emergent airway control, basic open
head and neck procedures (i.e., lymph node biopsy, thyroglossal duct cyst
excision, branchial cleft cyst excision, submandibular gland excision),
and assist on major head and neck operations. Late in the year, this resident
begins to perform endoscopic sinus surgery with supervision.
