Graduate Medical Education
Residency in Otolaryngology
The Internship Year ­ R 1

Beginning July 2005, the first year of the Otolaryngology Residency Program will be under the direction of the Otolaryngology Residency Program Director. The first year otolaryngology resident will spend four months on the General Surgery Service, and one month on each of the following Rush services: Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, Plastic Surgery, MICU, Emergency Medicine and Otolaryngology; and one month on Trauma at the John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County. With appropriate supervision, the first year resident will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the management of: pre and post-operative patients, including fluids, ventilators, and airway; patients with multiple injuries including closed head trauma; perioperative anesthesia and pain management; patients with cranio-facial anomalies; patients with multi-organ system abnormalities and other duties as may be required. First year residents, like other otolaryngology residents, are evaluated after each rotation and discuss these evaluations with the Program Director and Director of Resident Education formally every six months.
