Second & Third Year Residents in Dermatology
Second year residents (PGY-3) and third year residents (PGY-4) assume greater independence and assist the Chief Resident in presenting lectures and other formal teaching sessions to medical students and house staff who participate in a dermatology elective. Departmental administrative duties pertaining to the resident training program (clinic assignments and schedules, organization of seminars, etc.) are performed by the Chief Resident.
Annually, the Department of Dermatology sees approximately 24,000 outpatients with 2 to 5 inpatient admissions per month, and receives over 500 referrals for inpatient hospital consultations. Patients with cutaneous T cell lymphoma are followed in the CTCL multi-specialty clinic. Some of these patients are admitted to the Dermatology inpatient service for extracorporeal chemophotopheresis.
Clinical experience encompasses a broad spectrum of problems including cutaneous infections, autoimmune blistering diseases, psoriasis and other major dermatoses, drug eruptions, cutaneous malignancies, connective tissue diseases and complicated diagnostic problems. The department is a major referral center for the greater Chicago area. Specialty clinics include pigmented lesion, cutaneous T cell lymphoma, ethnic skin and hair clinic, pediatric dermatology clinic, cutaneous skin surgery, laser surgery and clinical pharmacology. Surgery experience includes routine and more complicated procedures such as Mohs surgery, CO2 and pulsed dye laser surgery, dermabrasion, flap rotations and sclerotherapy as well as other cosmetic surgery and laser surgery techniques. Residents are also trained in the administration of phototherapy.
