First Year Residents in Dermatology
A PGY-1 year is required for a dermatology residency position and is restricted to Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Pediatrics or Emergency Room Services, at any ACGME-accredited institution. Candidates apply for both the PGY-1 and dermatology residency programs at the same time.
A first year resident (PGY-2) participates in the outpatient service by making initial contact with new and follow-up patients and discussing differential diagnostic and therapeutic regimens under the supervision of the attending physicians. The resident learns routine and special diagnostic procedures such as skin biopsies and excisions, patch testing, phototherapy, and KOH and Tzanck smear preparations.
The resident gradually assumes more responsibility for patient care as the year progresses. Hospitalized patients are assigned to a consult/inpatient resident who is responsible for organizing their evaluation and treatment under the supervision of a full-time faculty member. This resident works in concert with the inpatient consult attending for the month. The consultation/inpatient resident rotation is shared by the first, second and third year residents.
